Wimax
WiMax – Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a technology developed to provide Broadband wireless access to large areas (distance of over 2 miles). The technology is based on the 802.16 standard, it uses OFDMA Modulation and supports datarates comparable to those of WiFi. WiMax operates at different frequencies in different countries. The two main frequencies that have been allocated to this technology by majority of the countries are the 2.5 GHz band and the 3.5 GHz Band. Currently WiMax is being used to provide last mile connectivity replacing the Wired infrastructure required by Cable and DSL. Another version of WiMax called Mobile WiMax (802.16e) has been developed for Handheld and Portable devices and is expected to be used as the 4G standard for Telecommunications.
